Oyuu Urges Timely Release of Capitation to Save Schools from Crisis
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu has urged the government to release school capitation funds on time, citing operational and mental strain on head teachers. He emphasized that delayed funding hinders effective implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum. Oyuu also insisted current school heads should continue managing both primary and junior secondary schools.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has urged the government to release school capitation funds promptly, warning that delays are crippling the education system. Speaking in Migori County on Sunday, Oyuu emphasized that timely funding is essential for the success of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Oyuu noted that many school heads are forced to borrow money to run day-to-day operations due to delayed disbursements. He warned that the financial strain is taking a toll on the mental health of school administrators who are expected to manage institutions with little or no funding.
The union boss expressed concern over the psychological pressure head teachers are under, stating that many are experiencing stress due to managing underfunded schools. He said this is not sustainable and urged urgent intervention from the government.
Additionally, Oyuu insisted that the current heads of primary and junior secondary schools should retain their roles, as recommended by the presidential education reforms taskforce. He warned against any attempts to replace them, saying it would undermine progress made in education reforms.
