Cognitive Behavioural therapy
Cognitive Behavioural therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy refers to a psychological theory that aims at cognitive restructuring and activating behaviours. It is derived from behavioural theory.Behaviour refers to any act that individuals engage in either physically, emotionally and physiologically.Cognitive behavioural therapy has the following components:

1.Cognitive restructuring.

Cognitive restructuring refers to changing the negative thought patterns to a more positive ones.It also aims at changing the negative self talk to a positive self talk. For example if the person feels that he cannot be the best performer in school, instead the thoughts can be changed by introducing,I cannot be the best performer because I dont give it my best.

2.Behavioral Activation.

This simply means changing the negative behaviours associated the problem/issues for example anxiety attacks for someone suffering from General anxiety disorders. This can be achieved by rewarding the positive behaviours and punishing the negative behaviours. This serve as reinforcement to change the behaviours.

 3.Goal setting.

This involves creating plans of accomplishing SMART goals.Goals need to be specific, measurable, accurate, realistic and time bound. For example by the end of the month, I would like to have began practicing relaxation techniques. This is a short term goal.On the other hand,by the end of the year I would have healed from anxiety attacks. This is a long term.
