Family of KDF Soldier Captured by Al-Shabaab Appeals for Governments Help in His Release

The family of Sergeant Abdullahi Issa Ibrahim, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier believed to have been held captive by Al-Shabaab militants for nearly nine years, is urging the Kenyan government to intervene and secure his release. Sergeant Abdullahi was among the soldiers captured during the deadly attack on the Kenyan-run AMISOM base in El-Adde, Somalia, on January 15, 2016.

After years of uncertainty and the issuance of a presumption of death certificate by the KDF in December 2020, a recent video showing Sergeant Abdullahi appealing for help has rekindled hope in his family. In the video, the sergeant recounts his time since being taken captive, describing his experiences as part of the 9KR battalion stationed at Moi Barracks in Eldoret.

Kathra, the sergeant’s daughter, revealed that she initially received a call from Somalia in late 2024, during which a man claiming to be her father identified himself. Skeptical of the call, Kathra requested video proof, which was eventually sent a month later.

The family, residing in Maline Estate, Eldoret, has been living in distress, unaware of Abdullahi’s physical and mental condition after nearly a decade in captivity. Kathra expressed her anguish, saying, "As a family, we have been depressed, confused, and do not know where to turn. For the last eight years, we lost hope. We have been living like orphans."

She also pleaded with the Kenyan government to take action, adding, "We are asking as a family, the 10 years of torture is enough. We need him back home." The familys renewed hope is now focused on a swift government response to reunite them with their loved one.
