From his early days as a Regional Commissioner in high-pressure zones to his current leadership as Governor of Trans-Nzoia County, he has consistently worked to uphold the principles of good governance, security, and inclusivity. He underscored that his track record is proof of his unwavering commitment to the well-being of all Kenyans, irrespective of their ethnicity, region, or political affiliation. The governor expressed disappointment that a leader of Maalim’s stature would make statements that not only endanger peace but also fan the flames of division and hatred in a country that has struggled for unity over the years.

In his response, Natembeya clarified the intent behind his recent comments calling for the reinstatement of strong vetting procedures for the issuance of national identity cards in North Eastern Kenya. He explained that these remarks were grounded in national security concerns rather than any form of discrimination or bias. According to the governor, border regions face unique challenges such as the threat of illicit networks, illegal cross-border movements, and terrorism, which require thorough and prudent security measures. He went on to say that suggesting his expulsion from the country was both absurd and offensive. “I have taken note of the reckless and deeply troubling remarks by a certain politician who not only questioned my nationality but even suggested I be expelled from Kenya. Such incendiary statements are false, inflammatory, and strike at the very heart of our shared identity as Kenyans,” Natembeya said. He reaffirmed that his roots are firmly planted in Kenya, and his loyalty has always been to the nation and its people. He called on political leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public discourse, warning that such comments could potentially ignite unrest and undo the progress the country has made in promoting national unity.

Maalim’s remarks, which were delivered during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, April 22, caused widespread uproar. In his statement, Maalim accused Governor Natembeya of perpetuating discriminatory practices against certain communities through his stance on ID vetting in border areas. He argued that such actions could fuel ethnic tensions and possibly lead the country into a conflict similar to what has been witnessed in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo. “Natembeya belongs somewhere else; he doesn’t belong to Kenya, by the way. His ideas are crooked, let him leave here and go somewhere else,” Maalim commented, in what many viewed as an uncalled-for personal attack.
