In a major relief for university and college students, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has released Ksh.1.56 billion for tuition and upkeep. Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced that the funds were disbursed on Friday, benefiting thousands of students struggling with financial challenges.

A total of 31,263 TVET trainees and 33,863 university students are set to benefit from the funds. The CS highlighted that the disbursement will ensure students and trainees can continue their academic and research programs without disruption. Beneficiaries have been notified through HELBs official communication channels and advised to check their accounts.

This disbursement is part of the Ksh.32.7 billion allocated by HELB for the 2024/2025 financial year, aimed at supporting 195,522 TVET trainees and 390,612 university students. The CS expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to helping students despite ongoing challenges with the new University Funding Model.

The release of funds follows pressure from MPs and student protests over delayed payments. Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina had called on the Education Committee to address the funding crisis after a High Court ruling in December 2024 declared the new funding model unconstitutional. The Ministry of Education has pledged to introduce a revised funding plan later this year.
