Ineffective coping mechanisms for stress.
Ineffective coping mechanisms for stress.
People cope with stress in different ways. Some adopt effective coping mechanisms while some adopt ineffective coping mechanisms.Psychologists do recommend the effective coping mechanisms like relaxation techniques, breathing techniques, social support and engaging in exercises. The exercises include both physical and mental exercises. The ineffective coping mechanisms includes the following:
1.Drug and substance abuse.
Drug refers to any substance that alters the normal functioning of an individual from normalcy to abnormalcy.Drugs frequently abused include alcohol, bhang, cocaine, cigarettes and tobacco. In addition to that, some abuse over the counter drugs like cough syrups to cope with stress.
2.Avoidance.
Avoidance refers to turning away from the problem or running away from the problem. The animal used to explain avoidance is a turtle since when it is approached in a difficult situation,it hides. The animal which confronts the problem in a good way is an owl, when faced with difficulties,it deals with it peacefully.
Recommendations.
If an individual has been coping with the above ineffective coping mechanisms,it is important you start adopting mechanisms like physical exercises, relaxation techniques and breathing techniques,I would also recommend a visit to a psychologist or a counsellor for insights and self awareness which later lead to personal development.
