Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has broken his silence following his dramatic arrest over the school play Echoes of War, which he scripted for Butere Girls’ High School. The play sparked nationwide debate, leading to Malalas detention on April 10, 2025, for nearly 12 hours without formal charges.

Malala described the ordeal as a frightening experience, revealing that close to 50 officers apprehended him and moved him to undisclosed locations before finally detaining him at Eldama Ravine Police Station. “This was a blatant violation of my rights,” he said upon release, condemning the incident as unlawful and unjust.

Despite the ordeal, Malala praised the students of Butere Girls for their courage in standing by the play and refusing to perform at the National Drama Festivals without him and their essential stage materials. “These young girls are the true heroines of this nation,” he said, adding that their defiance symbolizes hope for change.

Malala now vows to pursue legal redress to ensure the play is showcased. “We are heading back to court to secure an order allowing Butere Girls to perform. Echoes of War must be seen by Kenyans,” he affirmed, pledging to fight for artistic freedom and the students’ right to expression.
