ODM party leader Raila Odinga has come out stronly  to the defense of Secretary General Edwin Sifuna following sharp and direct  criticism over his remarks concerning the party’s recent cooperation with the ruling UDA party. Speaking during an ODM delegate conference in Kakamega on Friday, July 25, Raila emphasized that Sifuna had every givn  right as a kenyan to express his opinion, especially as the partys spokesperson.

Raila underscored the importance of free speech within ODM, stating that internal disagreements were part of a healthy democracy. “If Sifuna has spoken, let him speak. Everyone is entitled to their view. That is democracy,” he said, encouraging party members to also voice their own opinions without fear.

Sifuna had recently criticized the Raila-Ruto deal signed in March, claiming the agreement lacked wide party consultation. Though Raila had previously cautioned Sifuna to choose his words carefully the other time, he has continued to back the SG, saying responses to internal matters should be discussed in party meetings, not in the press or in social media platforms.

At the same event, Budalang’i MP Raphael Wanjala called on Raila to caution Luo-Nyanza leaders pushing for Sifuna’s resignation. Wanjala stressed that ODM is now a national party and should not be reduced to tribal interests. “Tell them ODM is for all Kenyans,” he urged Raila.

Wanjala also defended Sifuna, calling him a future leader and warning against attempts to push him out. “Sifuna is not against the party. He is helping to steer it in the right direction,” he said.

The unfolding debate signals growing tensions within ODM  party but also highlights efforts by top leaders to safeguard party unity and democratic values for ODM.
