Sabina Chege Slams Arrest of Activist, Warns Govt Against 2024 Protest Repeat
MP Sabina Chege has condemned the arrest of activist Rose Njeri for creating a website educating Kenyans on the Finance Bill 2025. She warned the government against repeating mistakes that led to the 2024 protests. Njeri’s arrest has sparked widespread outrage from legal and civil society groups.

Nominated MP Sabina Chege has strongly criticized the government over the arrest of activist and software developer Rose Njeri, warning that such actions could reignite the kind of unrest witnessed during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests. Chege said Njeri was merely using a website to educate the public on the Finance Bill 2025, not incite violence.

Speaking during a live TV interview on June 3, Chege urged the government to embrace transparency instead of clamping down on citizens spreading information. "If the website is just for educational purposes and not inciting people, I don’t see why the mother of two should be arrested," she said.

Njeri was arrested on May 30 in South B after launching an online platform dubbed Civic Email, which allowed users to send objections to the Finance Bill 2025 with a single click. Her arrest has drawn backlash from various quarters, including former CJ David Maraga and the Law Society of Kenya, who are calling for her release.

Chege emphasized the need for open communication to avoid a repeat of last year’s chaos. "Let’s give information and not repeat the mistakes of 2024, where people didn’t understand the bill and ended up storming Parliament," she said.
