School Safety assessment for early childhood education
TYPE OF THE SCHOOL : Early childhood development and education.
HOW ASSESSMENT WAS DONE
We walked through the school buildings and grounds visiting sites such as the play ground , kitchen , classrooms . Use of a school safety check list was employed .While checking off the school safety list we assessed area of concern.
FINDINGS
1.SUCCESSFUL PREVENTION EFFORTS
a)Building exterior and grounds
The school has good directional signs that aid in easy maneuvering in the school. Doors , windows and the roof were secure to prevent accidents and injuries to the children . The school was neat and clean with well trimmed hedges and grass preventing presence of harmful creatures . There were trash cans that help in proper disposal of trash ensuring a clean environment . The school gate was in good condition, well labeled with pictures and drawings ensuring protection and captivation of the children . The sidewalks and pavements were well maintained to prevent accidents . There were five fire extinguishers that were annually inspected and certified which we confirmed from the school administration to ensure effective response in emergency situations.
b) Classrooms
The lighting conditions in the classes is adequate enhancing their studies they can see clearly and are able to navigate around the class freely in addition there is no risk of shock due to cased sockets. Bookcases are well arranged and fixed on the walls in a level the students can reach to avoid strain .welcoming classes enhance the mood of the pupils hence high performance due to pleasant atmosphere of learning. The class doors are well fitted and in good condition to avoid injuries to the students , the chairs are well arranged around the tables to enhance comfortably and movement to improve efficiency and ensure good movement in case of an emergency. The ground is well cemented and smooth to improve movement as students navigate in the class. The classmates are well painted and have large windows to facilitate aeration and lighting in the class to enhance clarity.
C) Crisis plans or emergency preparedness
The school has a crisis plan and is well prepared in terms of emergency whereby we observed that emergency drills are well practiced and enforced .The school has a good maintained crisis plan to address potential crisis example in case of : fire presence of fire extinguishers . Floods presence of good drainage systems. Intruders presence of security posts and guards. In addition to that they have a coordinated local emergency personnel to ensure school safety. The school crisis is comprehensive updated and tested annually.
d)kitchen and cafeteria
The school kitchen was clean and tidy the chairs tables and other cooking equipment were in good condition with doors and windows properly maintained and clean. There was proper ventilation and we noticed the employees had proper knowledge on use of kitchen equipment. There was proper storage on hazardous utensils Example knives . The floor was made of nonskid material and are regularly cleaned and repaired to prevent accidents. The cooks handled the food properly and stored the food well. The cleaning reagents were stored away from food and storage area . Upon consultation they confirmed they were well trained on use of fire extinguishers incase of emergencies.
e) playgrounds
The school playground is properly fenced to enhance safety it is free from large stones and hazardous material to prevent injury. The play ground was well leveled to facilitate good play. The playground was large in size to prevent congestion and accommodate the leaners. The field was well designed and divided to accommodate all game activities within the school.
2 .POTENTIAL RISKS OR WEAKNESSES
During the assessment we noticed that there is lack of speed limits at the enhances. We also noted that the vehicular traffic control was inadequate in the school grounds .pedestrian safety was not provided there was also lack of speed bumps in the school. Chemicals in the classroom were not well kept hence increasing health risks to children either via inhalation or consumption.
The school lacked school buses and there were no rules made for students to follow to have a safe ride home. There was no bus loading area.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Acquiring of a school bus to enhance transportation of students to and from the school.
Chemicals such as ink should be stored out of reach of children to prevent health risks .
Improve on signing of speed limits on each entrance along the schools .
Improve on speed bumps to enhance pedestrian and drivers safety to reduce accidents .
The school should buy gloves hairnet and uniforms to enhance cleanliness in the kitchen
Expansion of school compound to accommodation pupils and parking of vehicles.
Use of whiteboards and marker pens to reduce dust
Training cooks more adequately to improve on level of skills and knowledge.
Distribution of more bins in the compound to enhance cleanliness
Construction of more latrine to facilitate proper hygiene.
Distribution of more fire extinguisher
