SOCIAL MEDIA AS EMERGING ISSUE IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY.

Social media refers to the technological websites and applications which enables individuals and the community as a whole to communicate at a very faster rate since the distance is minimised.Someone once said,"Our cellphones takes us closer to people who are further away from us and takes us farther from those who are closer to us".Is there reality in this? Majority will propose this since it is actually what is happening in the current generation,it is emerging.

Twenty first century is the period between the year of two thousand and one to the year twenty one thousand.It is a period marked with high rates of technological advances and increase in creativity and innovativeness when it comes to technology and social media.Through creativity and innovativeness we have seen very many social media platforms being innovated for example Facebook which has enhanced proper communication globally, WhatsApp which has also served the main and fundamental role in communication.

Instagram has served as a platform in which people can make discussions in one or more emerging issues.They say two are more than one, when people come to this platform to share ideas from various perspectives then they find it easier to arrive at the final decision.Therefore,apart from serving as a point of discussion,it also serves as a platform for decision making.X which is formerly known as Twitter is not left behind when it comes to the enhancement of communication.

Zoom and Google meet apps have been interesting symbols when it comes to technological advancements.Education and information sharing have continued to be enhanced through the above platforms.It is through these applications that teachers and lecturers can adopt to educate virtually and virtually with distance not being a barrier or a block to its accomplishment.Even though social media has all these positive effects,it can also have diverse effects.

Social media leads to internet addiction.Internet addiction refers to the continued inability to stop using or engaging in social media contents.It has been recognised by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual as a psychological disorder.By psychological disorder,it means it can affect an individuals mental and emotional wellbeing.Therefore,if one majorly the children begin engaging in social media at a younger age,then there are high probability of addiction at later age.

Cyber bullying is another disadvantage of social media.Most of the times, some individuals can use social media as a platform for spreading wrong information about other people or rather myths about other people.Social media has also been used as an ego defence mechanism where some can use it to project and displace their feelings and emotions.Cyber bullying is a rising concern in many countries and there is urgent need to take action and need to change our perspective towards it.

It is through social media that majority of youths spend huge amounts of money.This has occured due to high cases of financial illitracy among many youths.Therefore, theres need for effective financial literacy among youths internet spending.To conclude,there are very many effects of social both negative and positive and therefore there is need for control.
