Stages of Addiction recovery.
Stages of Addiction recovery.
Addiction refers to a psychological disorder that makes an individual to be unable to stop engaging in a behaviour. It is considered a disease by psychologists. The reason why it is considered a disease is because it can be treated and a person suffering from addiction can heal just like any other diseases like malaria and headache. For one to heal, acceptance must be the clients first action. For the treatment to be successful, the following stages must be followed:
1.Precontemplation stage.
Here, the client is not aware of the benefits of change and has no plans for change. In this stage, psychoeducation and education and awareness can serve a very fundamental role.
2.Contemplation stage
Here, the client is aware of the benefits of change but has no plans for change.Again here, psychoeducation helps more to raise awareness.
3.Preparation stage
Here, the client is aware of the benefits of change and is planning to actively make a change.
4.Action stage.
Here, the client is actively implementing changes to overcome addiction for example seeking psychological counselling and social support.
5.Maintenance stage
The client here is trying to remain drug free to prevent relapse.Relapse refers to engagement in the behaviour left for the second time.
