Tension in Kakamega as Police Clash with DCP Supporters During Rally
Chaos broke out in Kakamega as police clashed with supporters of the Democracy for Citizens Party during a rally led by Cleophas Malala. Police used teargas to disperse the crowd, sparking condemnation from DCP leaders. The incident occurred ahead of the party’s official launch set for June 3, 2025.
Chaos erupted in Kakamega town after police engaged in running battles with supporters of the newly formed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by deputy party leader Cleophas Malala. The standoff began when a police vehicle blocked the DCP convoy during its western region tour, forcing police to lob teargas to disperse the crowd.
Malala, accompanied by Senators Methu Muhia (Nyandarua) and Karungo Thang’wa (Kiambu), condemned the police action, accusing security officers of using excessive force, including live bullets, against peaceful supporters. “Kenya is governed by the rule of law; such brutality has no place in a democratic society,” Malala stated.
The Kakamega tour marks the DCPs first major political activity in the region, ahead of its official launch scheduled for June 3, 2025. The party, linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has positioned itself as a key player in the 2027 election race.
Gachagua recently unveiled a lineup of prominent former UDA and Jubilee leaders as DCP officials, including Malala, ex-CS Mithika Linturi, and former MPs Catherine Waruguru and David Mingati, among others. The names have been submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties for approval.
