Former Kenyan President and EAC peace envoy to the DRC, Uhuru Kenyatta, has linked the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC to a lack of political commitment and shifting priorities. He criticized both the Congolese government and M23 rebels for failing to engage in peace talks, which has fueled renewed violence. Kenyatta noted that the withdrawal of the EAC regional force worsened negotiations, while DRC’s focus on its December 2023 elections disrupted the Nairobi Peace Process and led to Kenya’s military pullout. Despite ongoing discussions with DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and M23 leaders, he admitted that the country remains politically and militarily unstable. To ease tensions, Kenyatta urged direct talks between Rwanda and the DRC. A high-level summit involving SADC and EAC leaders is set for Friday and Saturday, with Presidents Paul Kagame and Tshisekedi expected to attend. Meanwhile, M23 rebels continue to hold key towns in eastern DRC.
