Wetangula Declares Kenya Kwanza Majority, Azimio MPs Walk Out
Speaker Moses Wetangula declared Kenya Kwanza the Majority side despite a court ruling against it, sparking protests from Azimio MPs. Led by Millie Odhiambo, they walked out in disagreement, vowing further action. The court had ruled Azimio held the Majority before defections to Kenya Kwanza.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has declared Kenya Kwanza as the Majority side in Parliament, despite a court ruling stripping the coalition of that status. He argued that the court did not specify which side should be the Majority or Minority, maintaining that Kenya Kwanza still holds 165 members against Azimios 154.
Wetangula directed that an appeal be filed against the ruling and affirmed that the House leadership remains unchanged. His decision was met with opposition from Azimio MPs, led by Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo, who vowed to take further action against it.
In protest, Azimio lawmakers walked out of the House, insisting that the court had declared their coalition the Majority. They accused Wetangula of disregarding a ruling that aligned with records from the Registrar of Political Parties.
The High Court had ruled that Azimio was the Majority before 14 of its MPs defected to Kenya Kwanza. During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, Azimio MPs occupied the Majority side and urged Wetangula to respect the court’s decision.
