The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather forecast covering Sunday, September 6, 2026, indicating that most parts of the country will experience generally sunny and dry conditions, although light rainfall and showers are expected in several counties. The forecast comes as Kenya continues to experience significant differences in weather conditions between the coastal areas, central highlands, northern Kenya, Rift Valley and western regions.

KMD's daily forecast is designed to provide information on rainfall, temperatures, winds and other weather conditions to help Kenyans plan their daily activities. The department also publishes county-specific forecasts to provide more localized information for communities, farmers, transport operators and other sectors. 

General weather situation today

According to the latest forecast issued on September 5, most parts of Kenya are expected to remain sunny and dry, meaning that widespread heavy rainfall is not anticipated across the country today. However, isolated and light showers are expected in several areas.

The current five-day forecast covers the period from Sunday, September 6, to Thursday, September 10, 2026. KMD's outlook shows that rainfall will be relatively localized rather than widespread. This means that residents in a county should not necessarily assume that the entire county will receive rain because showers may be restricted to particular parts of that county. 

Today's forecast is particularly important for farmers, motorists, students, outdoor workers and people planning travel. Light showers can occur suddenly, particularly during the afternoon or at night, even when conditions earlier in the day are sunny.

Counties expecting rain today

Several counties have been identified as having a possibility of rainfall today.

Mombasa and Kwale

The coastal region is among the areas expecting rainfall. Mombasa and Kwale are forecast to experience light showers, particularly during the morning. Mombasa is expected to have light showers today, with additional showers forecast on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Kwale is also expected to experience showers during the forecast period. Residents in coastal areas should therefore be prepared for changing conditions, especially during the morning hours. 

The coastal weather is important for fishermen, traders, tourism businesses, transport operators and residents who depend on outdoor activities. Even light rain can affect visibility on roads and make some surfaces slippery.

Lamu

Lamu County is also among the coastal counties where rainfall is expected. KMD's forecast indicates that Lamu could experience light showers today, with another possibility later in the forecast period.

Although the showers are expected to be light, residents should monitor weather developments, particularly those involved in fishing and marine activities. Weather conditions at the coast can change relatively quickly.

Garissa

In northeastern Kenya, Garissa County is expected to experience light afternoon showers today. This is notable because much of northern and northeastern Kenya is normally characterized by hot and dry conditions.

The forecast indicates that Garissa could experience light afternoon rainfall today, followed by additional chances of showers during the week. Residents should therefore be prepared for a temporary change from hot and sunny conditions to cloudy or rainy weather. 

Nyandarua and Nyeri

Central Kenya is also expected to receive isolated rainfall. Nyandarua and Nyeri are among the counties where light showers are expected today, particularly during the afternoon.

Nyandarua is expected to receive afternoon showers today and again on Tuesday. Nyeri may similarly experience showers today and Tuesday. These conditions are particularly relevant to farmers because even light rainfall can provide some moisture for crops and pasture. 

However, the expected rainfall should not be interpreted as widespread or heavy rain across the entire counties. Local conditions may differ from one area to another.

Siaya

In western Kenya, Siaya County is expected to receive light afternoon showers beginning today. The forecast indicates that Siaya may continue receiving light afternoon rainfall through Tuesday.

Residents should therefore be prepared for wet conditions during parts of the afternoon, while morning conditions may remain relatively dry or sunny. 

Bungoma and Busia

Bungoma and Busia are also expected to experience occasional afternoon showers. According to the five-day forecast, both counties have a possibility of rainfall today and again on Tuesday.

The western region is agriculturally important, and farmers may welcome the rainfall, particularly in areas where crops require moisture. Nevertheless, farmers should continue monitoring local forecasts because rainfall amounts can vary significantly over short distances. 

Other counties expecting rain during the week

Although today's forecast is the main focus, the five-day outlook also identifies a number of other counties that may receive rainfall between September 6 and September 10.

These include Kilifi, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Marsabit, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kitui, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.

Rainfall in these counties is expected on different days and at different times. For example, Kilifi is forecast to receive light showers from Tuesday through Thursday, while Tana River may receive showers later in the week. Taita Taveta could experience light rain on Wednesday. 

In the Rift Valley, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu and Nandi may experience light showers on Tuesday afternoon. Kericho is expected to have light afternoon showers on Monday and Tuesday, while Bomet may receive showers on Tuesday. 

Western Kenya will also see localized rainfall. Kakamega, Bungoma and Busia could experience occasional afternoon showers, while Kisumu may receive a light shower on Monday afternoon. Migori, Kisii and Nyamira are expected to have light showers mainly on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Nairobi weather today

Nairobi is not among the areas expecting significant rainfall today. Instead, the capital is expected to experience sunny intervals during the day followed by partly cloudy conditions at night.

The five-day outlook indicates daytime temperatures in Nairobi of approximately 25°C to 27°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to range between approximately 11°C and 14°C. 

This means Nairobi residents should not necessarily expect rain today, although cloudy conditions may become more noticeable later in the day or at night.

Central Kenya and cold conditions

One of the notable features of the current forecast is the continued cold weather in some parts of Central Kenya.

Nyandarua is expected to experience some of the lowest nighttime temperatures, with temperatures around 4°C on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Other areas, including parts of Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado and Narok, will also experience relatively cool nights. 

The combination of cool nights and occasional light showers means residents in high-altitude areas should continue taking precautions against cold conditions, particularly early in the morning and at night.

Implications for farmers

The forecast is particularly important for Kenya's agricultural sector. Farmers rely heavily on accurate rainfall information when making decisions about planting, harvesting, spraying crops, applying fertilizer and moving livestock.

The light showers expected in parts of western Kenya, Central Kenya, the Coast and Rift Valley could provide some short-term moisture. However, the current forecast does not indicate that the entire country will receive widespread rainfall.

Farmers should therefore avoid making decisions based solely on the expectation of rain in a neighboring county. KMD's county forecasts are useful because rainfall can vary substantially even between nearby locations. KMD specifically provides localized county forecasts intended to support agricultural planning and other activities. 

Implications for motorists and travellers

Motorists should also pay attention to the forecast. Even light rainfall can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. This is especially important on busy highways and roads passing through hilly or highland areas.

People travelling through counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Bungoma, Busia, Mombasa, Kwale and Garissa should be prepared for changing weather conditions where showers are forecast.

Drivers should reduce speed when roads become wet, maintain a safe following distance and use headlights when visibility becomes poor.

Why Kenyans should continue monitoring KMD updates

Weather forecasts can change as atmospheric conditions develop. A forecast for light rainfall does not guarantee that every location in a county will receive rain. Similarly, a dry forecast in the morning does not completely eliminate the possibility of localized showers later.
