Coffee Farming Booms in Baringo with Expanded Acreage and Market Access
Coffee farming in Baringo County has expanded from 3,200 to over 4,500 hectares by 2025. Government support through seedling distribution, inputs, and a new coffee mill has fueled the growth. The push aims to make Baringo a major coffee hub with improved farmer incomes and global market access.

Coffee farming in Baringo County has seen a major boost, with the area under cultivation rising from 3,200 hectares in 2022 to over 4,500 hectares in 2025. This growth follows county government initiatives such as subsidized seedling distribution, farm inputs, and improved extension services.

In 2023 alone, 100,000 seedlings were issued to farmers in Baringo South, Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, and Baringo Central. The launch of the Baringo Cha Coffee Mill in Katimok—built at a cost of Sh100 million in partnership with a Korean investor—has also helped farmers reduce processing costs and tap into international markets.

The national government aims to plant 5 million coffee bushes in Baringo, supported by the Coffee Research Institute, as part of efforts to make the county a key coffee-growing hub in Kenya.

These developments have not only increased production but also improved livelihoods by strengthening market access and the coffee value chain.
