Amollo Threatens Lifetime Ban on Gachagua from Public Office Over Divisive Politics
Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo has threatened to table a motion to permanently bar former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from holding public office. He accuses Gachagua of promoting ethnic division despite his 2024 impeachment. Amollo cited Article 75 of the Constitution as the legal basis for the potential ban.
Rarieda Member of Parliament Dr. Otiende Amollo has issued a stern warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, threatening to table a motion in Parliament seeking to bar him from ever holding public office in Kenya again. Amollo accused Gachagua of continuously fueling ethnic and divisive politics, despite having faced impeachment in 2024. Speaking during a funds drive in Rongo on Sunday, Amollo said Gachagua’s public statements prove that he did not learn from his impeachment, which was carried out under Article 75 of the Constitution — a section that addresses the integrity and conduct of public officers. “Every day you speak, it becomes more evident that you never learned your lesson,” Amollo said. “We impeached you under Article 75, but we did not go far enough.
We only removed you from office. This time, if you persist with your divisive utterances, we’ll take it to the next level.” He referenced Article 75(3) of the Constitution, which provides for the permanent disqualification of a person removed from office on grounds of violation of leadership and integrity principles. The clause stipulates that anyone removed under Article 75 cannot hold any future public office. “If you continue promoting ethnic divisions, we will initiate a special motion under Article 75(3), which will ensure that you are barred from ever contesting for public office in Kenya again,” Amollo warned. “Do not assume that your actions have no consequences — they do.” This threat adds momentum to a growing wave of criticism against the former Deputy President from leaders allied to the broad-based unity government. Many have accused Gachagua of attempting to incite ethnic tensions and undermine national cohesion through his rhetoric.
Amollo’s remarks come in the wake of Gachagua’s renewed political offensive against President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration for over weeks now. Since his impeachment, Gachagua has intensified his public engagements and political rallies, accusing the government of betrayal and poor governance, while positioning himself as a voice for what he terms as the "marginalized communities" of the Mount Kenya region. However, his critics argue that his tone has turned increasingly tribal, and his political language risks destabilizing national unity efforts.
According to Amollo, the nation cannot afford to tolerate such conduct from leaders who once occupied high office and should know better. “This country has moved forward for good. We cannot go back to politics of division, tribalism, and hate anymore. Leaders must be held accountable for their words and actions,” Amollo stated about it . The MP’s comments have sparked debate in political circles, with supporters of the former DP dismissing the threats as political intimidation with no weapon.
However, allies of the current administration have welcomed the remarks, saying it is time the law is enforced to curb the rise of reckless political behavior. As political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the 2027 general election, the fate of Gachagua — and his eligibility for a political comeback — now hangs in the balance, with the possibility of a parliamentary motion looming.
