This involves keen paying of attention to the clients story and being able to make conclusion from the story.This active listening helps the client and the therapist to build trust between them as well as enhancing the autonomy of the client.When applied appropriately,the counsellor can be able to design the best treatment planning for the client.

Empathy refers to feeling what the client is feeling.It refers to understanding what the client is going through.Empathy is not sympathy it is just understanding and feeling what the client is going through.By doing this,the counsellor creates a good rapport with the client as well as enhancing the trust between counsellor and the client.Empathy is also a core condition for counselling.This is according to Carl Rogers.

Observation refers to an action focused on looking at the clients verbal and non verbal cues.The non verbal cues involves ones clothin and ability to maintain eye contact.On the other hand, verbal cues include ability to communicate verbally and it is usually achieved through the clients verbal communication.As a counsellor,you need to observe these cues for successful diagnosis and treatment planning.
