The Kenya Defence Forces, on Monday, commenced construction of projects worth 1.7 billion shillings in Siaya County with the groundbreaking ceremony led by the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Soipan Tuya. The projects include the construction of a modern referral hospital and the expansion of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex in Siaya town.

Speaking at the inauguration, Cabinet Secretary Tuya stressed the government’s commitment to prioritizing projects that touch the lives of citizens. “Government is committed to ensuring that the people of Siaya have access to quality healthcare services and that the government is laying the foundation for a prosperous society in Siaya County,” he said. He stressed that expanding and installing modern healthcare infrastructure is central to the Kenya First Administration’s Economic Transformation Agenda.

The minister, who is flanked by Permanent Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports), Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Dr. Patrick Mariru (Defense), said the modern hospital when completed will have advanced medical technology that will provide specialized health services and contribute to the overall well-being of the people of Siaya.

At the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, the Minister said KDF will upgrade and increase its capacity from the current 5,000 to 20,000. “We will expand the pitches, put up a roof and improve the surrounding infrastructure,” said Tuya, adding that this will help promote talent development and position Siaya as not only a local but a regional and international hub for all forms of sports. Siaya Governor, James Orengo described the health sector infrastructure projects and expansion as timely interventions that will strengthen Siaya’s health system.

“This project will transform the delivery of health services in Siaya County and provide the medical care needed by our people,” he said, adding “We will continue to work with the national government to ensure that these projects are not only completed on time but also well-managed and sustainable.” According to the governor, the upgraded health centre will not only serve the residents of Siaya but will also attract patients from the entire region, becoming a major healthcare facility beyond the county boundaries. Welcoming the launch of the second phase of the stadium construction, Orengo expressed hope that the upgraded facility will elevate the status of Siaya sports and provide new opportunities for youth to develop their talents.

"The stadium will not only be a home for sports but also a place of pride for the community, youth empowerment, and economic growth," he said. He stressed the importance of the county and national governments partnership in promoting development, while assuring residents that his administration will continue to support projects that benefit the community.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Siaya County, Robert Ngetich, the County Secretary, Joseph Ogutu and many members of the county assembly.
