The Kenyan government has initiated an ambitious multibillion-shilling development agenda in the Coast region aimed at addressing the long-standing neglect and economic marginalization of the area. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki emphasized that the government is committed to uplifting the standards of living in the region by implementing key infrastructure and empowerment programs.
Speaking during an economic empowerment forum in Tana River County, the Deputy President assured residents that the government would not sideline them in national development efforts. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring all regions, including historically underdeveloped ones like Tana River, are equitably developed. He noted that this inclusive approach was necessary to foster unity and national growth.
Kindiki pointed out that the coastal region, and particularly Tana River, would no longer be left behind in terms of economic development. He stated that it was time for all counties to develop equally, promising that the government would ensure the Coast region catches up with the rest of the country. The government’s strategy includes skill-building, market development, and enhanced service delivery to the people.
A key aspect of the governments plan is the construction of modern markets in various towns including Garsen, Hola, Bangale, and Mandogo. These new markets will feature vital facilities such as spacious trading areas, cold storage units, lactation rooms for nursing mothers, social halls, and ICT centers. These upgrades are expected to create a better business environment and promote local trade.
In the area of education and digital empowerment, the government has completed the construction of a Jitume Lab at Garsen Technical Institute, equipped with 100 computers. Additionally, 580 hostel units are being built at the institution under the affordable housing initiative, which aims to make education more accessible while also addressing housing needs.
To boost the blue economy, the government has allocated Ksh.151 million to empower fishermen and enhance operations of the beach management units in Kipini. This financial support will help improve productivity, income levels, and the overall wellbeing of communities dependent on fishing for their livelihoods.
Access to electricity remains a major concern in Tana River County. In response, the government has allocated Ksh.205 million for electricity expansion in Garsen, Ksh.211 million for Bura, and Ksh.36 million for Galole. The Deputy President also promised to engage President Ruto to secure more funding for these areas, acknowledging their years of marginalization.
Moreover, the government is investing Ksh.411 million to complete the Garsen-Witu-Mukowe road, which links Tana River and Lamu counties. The project is expected to improve transport connectivity, boost trade, and open up the region to new economic opportunities.
The Deputy President praised the unity and inclusiveness of the current administration, urging Kenyans to reject leaders who promote tribalism and division. He emphasized that the governments empowerment efforts are not driven by politics but by a sincere desire to serve all citizens consistently, not just during elections.
He concluded by calling on residents to embrace national unity and development, emphasizing the importance of remaining united under one flag and as one people.
