The family of the late Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, has issued a heartfelt message to Kenyans as preparations for his burial intensify. In an emotional statement delivered during a condolence visit by fellow comedian Kafengo, the family expressed deep gratitude for the love, support, and financial contributions they have continued to receive from well-wishers across the country.
KK Mwenyewe, who rose to fame for his viral impersonations of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2025, while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital. His sudden death shocked the entertainment industry and his devoted online fan base, leaving a void in Kenya’s comedy scene. He was only in the early stages of what many believed would be a long and successful comedic career.
During the visit on Saturday, July 19, KKs mother delivered an emotional message to the public. Fighting back tears, she described her son as not only a joy to the nation but also the backbone of their household. She revealed that he was her only source of support—financially, emotionally, and spiritually. His passing, she said, has left her in unbearable pain, but she has chosen to accept it as part of God’s divine plan.
“KK was not just my child, he was my strength,” she said. “He helped me in every way a mother could hope for. But God had other plans. Still, I want to sincerely thank all Kenyans who are walking this journey with us. Your contributions, your words, your prayers—they mean everything to us right now.”
She urged the public to continue sending in contributions to the family via a till number that has been shared on various social media platforms. According to her, the funds will help the family give KK a respectful and dignified send-off, something she believes her son deserves after making millions of Kenyans laugh.
Her sentiments were echoed by KK’s uncle, who reiterated the importance of national unity and public support during moments of personal loss. He disclosed that KK was not only a beloved son and nephew, but also the family’s breadwinner, whose efforts had helped lift them from financial struggle. He described him as a young man who remained humble and grounded even after rising to stardom.
“As a family, we were depending on him,” the uncle said. “It’s not just about the comedy, he was also taking care of his family. That’s why this loss is so heavy. We are appealing to Kenyans to continue helping us, just like they have been doing. We shall forever be grateful.”
News of KK Mwenyewe’s death was first announced by his close friend and content partner Kafengo, who took to social media to break the heartbreaking news. In his statement, Kafengo described KK as a visionary comic whose creativity and passion had set him apart in the crowded online content scene.
“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of Zakaria Kariuki, also known as KK Mwenyewe. He died while undergoing treatment. During these trying times, we ask for your prayers and support. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Kafengo wrote.
KK Mwenyewe became a household name after his humorous videos mimicking Deputy President Gachagua went viral, earning him wide recognition for his natural comedic timing and deep understanding of political satire. Many fans admired his ability to address social and political issues in a lighthearted, relatable manner. His authenticity and creativity made him a rising star in digital comedy, with a large and loyal fan base on platforms such as TikTok, X, and YouTube.
As funeral arrangements continue, friends, fans, and fellow entertainers continue to share tributes, videos, and memories of the late comedian online. A vigil and memorial service are expected in the coming days before KK is laid to rest in his ancestral home.
His passing is not just a loss to his family, but also to the entire Kenyan creative industry, which mourns a talent gone too soon. Despite the grief, the family remains overwhelmed by the love Kenyans have shown and are counting on that continued support to give their beloved KK the farewell he truly deserves.
