The One Kenya Movement, which includes young MPs, is now promising to endorse a presidential candidate in the upcoming general election, promising to bring about a “third liberation for the country”. The members of the movement, who were elected on party tickets from ODM, UDA, Ford Kenya and DAP-K, say they want to bring about real change that reflects the aspirations of the modern generation of Kenyans, known as Gen-Z.
“We, as leaders of the current generation, are ready to take over the leadership of this nation in 2027 by endorsing a presidential candidate. “One Kenya Movement is not a third party as some claim; this is the main movement because young Kenyans are the majority in the country,” said Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, who is one of the stars of the movement. “Look at Burkina Faso, (Ibrahim) Traore was president at 32.
Gaddafi became president at 28. We Kenyan youth are late,” he added in an interview with NTV. Mr Owino was referring to current Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore, who is credited with bringing about major reforms in the country, and former Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi who left behind a good record of leadership. The race for the 2027 Kenyan presidency has begun to gather momentum, with a group of young leaders emerging and beginning to attract the attention of Kenyans, especially the youth
According to the leaders, One Kenya aims to bring about real change by eliminating what they call the leadership of a generation that has failed to meet the expectations of the people for many years. They insist that the youth are now mature and ready to take the reins of leadership from 2027. The MPs insist that Their aim is not to divide the opposition, but to unite Kenyans who want real change.
They say if Kenyans want them to take further steps like forming a formal party or nominating a presidential candidate, they are ready to do so. “If the people tell us to stand up and be their voice, we are ready. If we are told to form a party, we will do so. We are only responding to the call of the people,” said Caleb Amisi (Saboti MP). And Ms Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri) stressed that their goal is to provide citizens with solutions to the challenges they are going through, and not to seek political fame.
However, political analysts have warned that if Kenya Moja does not differentiate itself with meaningful policies and political direction, it may be seen as another short-lived political alliance based solely on political rhetoric.
Despite this, Kenya Moja leaders have defended themselves, saying they have good intentions and the capacity to bring about real change. They have called on the government to hand over leadership to a new generation with vision and better qualifications. “You can’t trust a 65-year-old pilot to take you to the skies, why would you trust a politician of that age to lead our lives?” asked Ms Wamuchomba.“The main agenda of One Kenya is to remove the failed resolution. We want to show the true meaning of leadership,” added Babu. However, political pundits are skeptical about the ability of One Kenya members to sustain themselves on their own as they have not built a reputation in all corners of the country. “These politicians are political kids raised by senior politicians and it will be difficult for them to stand on their own in the next general election.
Apart from not having a strong national presence, these politicians do not have the financial strength to enable them to build a movement to sponsor a capable candidate,” says Professor Gitile Naituli. Secondly, they will be poisoned by tribal politics in the country, by being portrayed as traitors to their tribes,” says Professor Gitile Naituli.
According to the expert, the MPs have already begun to realize the truth about this deficiency which is why last week they indicated that they are ready to collaborate with the wing of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Speaking at the Jesus Teaching Ministry Church, Embakasi East, Nairobi, Kitutu Chache Kusini MP Antony Kibagendi said that this collaboration will enable them to achieve their agenda of ensuring that President William Ruto serves only one term. “We have decided to collaborate to save this nation from the tyrannical rule of Kenya Kwanza. "This is why I am appealing to my colleagues here to work with Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, George Natembeya, Fred Matiangi and all opposition leaders to liberate our country," he said
With him were their host, Mr Owino, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna (ODM), Caleb Amisi (Saboti, ODM), Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba, ODM) and Obadiah Barongo (Bomachoge Borabu, ODM)."We have decided to work together to save this nation from the tyrannical rule of Kenya First. This is why I am appealing to my colleagues here that we should work together with Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, George Natembeya, Fred Matiangi and all opposition leaders to liberate our country," he said.
