Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has stated that there is no evidence suggesting an outsider was responsible for the death of a patient who was found with a fatal neck wound at the facility.

In a statement on Sunday, KNH Acting CEO Dr. William Sigilai confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) immediately took charge of the case upon notification.

Patient Found Dead in the Ward

According to hospital reports, the patient, identified as Mr. Kinyua, was discovered on Friday at approximately 6 a.m. during routine nurse rounds. A nurse found his face covered with a blood-stained sheet, and upon uncovering him, realized he was motionless with a deep cut on his neck.

“The nurse immediately alerted her colleagues, security personnel, the attending doctor, and the hospital’s management,” Dr. Sigilai said. “The area was promptly secured as a crime scene, and the DCI was called in to investigate. However, at this point, there is no evidence indicating that anyone from outside the hospital was involved in the crime.”

Security Measures Strengthened

In response to the incident, KNH has reinforced security measures to ensure the safety of patients, medical staff, and visitors.

Dr. Sigilai further confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death.

“The KNH management is deeply saddened by this tragic event and remains committed to transparency and accountability throughout the investigation process,” he said.

He urged the public to refrain from speculation that could cause further distress to the victim’s family and assured that the hospital is fully cooperating with the authorities.

Psychosocial Support for the Family

KNH has also provided psychosocial support to the deceased’s family to help them cope with the tragedy.

“Our team of psychologists and counselors have been mobilized to support the family and help them process this painful loss. A 24-hour helpline has been established for ongoing psychological support, and a second counseling session was conducted for a larger group of family members,” the hospital said.

The DCI continues to lead the investigation, with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shocking incident.
