Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially thrown his hat into the 2027 presidential race, declaring that his campaign will be fully funded by Kenyans through transparent, ethical online donations. In an exclusive interview with K24 TV on Monday, July 21, Maraga said the overwhelming public response to his call for contributions shows a deep hunger for honest, transformative leadership in the country.

The retired CJ revealed that within just two days of launching his campaign donation website, Kenyans had contributed over KSh 500,000, with even more coming in from Kenyans in the diaspora in U.S. dollars. He said this remarkable response reflects public trust in his vision and a growing consensus that its time to break away from politics fueled by corruption and impunity. “That tells you Kenyans want change,” he noted confidently.

Maraga is anchoring his 2027 bid on integrity, clean governance, and the restoration of public trust in leadership. With widespread dissatisfaction over how the country has been governed, Maraga is positioning himself not just as a candidate—but as the face of a new movement that seeks to rescue Kenya from decades of systemic failure. “I will stand firm for the Kenyans… to give them the leadership they deserve,” he vowed.

Known for his unwavering stance on judicial independence and constitutionalism, Maraga didn’t hold back in his criticism of the current government. He accused the administration of economic mismanagement and warned that Kenya is staring at a debt crisis of historic proportions. “Public debt has gone haywire since 2013. Unless we take urgent action, we risk a default,” he said, painting a grim picture of Kenya’s fiscal future.

He argued that the political elite have continued to exploit vulnerable citizens by using stolen public funds to buy votes, all while essential services like health and education remain underfunded. “You’re being bribed with your own stolen money while suffering in hospitals with no medicine and schools with no funding,” Maraga said. He emphasized that his campaign would rely solely on small, transparent donations from citizens—not tainted wealth.

Maraga described his run as a “rescue mission” for a nation at the brink, saying that his upcoming manifesto, to be released in the coming months, will provide a clear roadmap for economic recovery, anti-corruption reforms, and restoring dignity to public service. “When we unveil our full manifesto, you’ll see the serious work we’re ready to do to revamp the economy,” he assured.

While he has long been considered an outsider to traditional Kenyan politics, Maraga signaled readiness to collaborate with any leader who shares his values. He said he is open to forming alliances with reform-oriented individuals who are willing to fight corruption, uphold the rule of law, and protect the lives and rights of all Kenyans. “If they are serious about serving Kenyans and ending killings and injustice, I can work with them,” he said.

As the 2027 election race begins to heat up, Maraga’s candidacy is already stirring national debate, with many viewing him as a clean break from the past. With a groundswell of public support, especially among youth and professionals, the former Chief Justice is making it clear that he is not just running for office—he is running to reshape the future of Kenya.
