Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has officially stepped down from his position as Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto, ending his latest role in a long and eventful journey in government service. Kuria, known for his bold political style and strong presence in the public arena, made the announcement on Monday evening through his official social media platforms, confirming he had met with President Ruto to tender his resignation.

In a candid and emotional message, Kuria expressed his appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve the nation in various high-profile capacities. He noted that his decision was personal and had been accepted by the President with understanding and goodwill.

“This evening I have met my boss and my friend, President William Ruto,” Kuria wrote. “The President has graciously accepted my decision to resign from government.” Though he refrained from outlining his next steps, Kuria revealed that he would now focus on pursuing personal interests, hinting at a new phase in his life beyond the corridors of power.

Kuria went on to highlight his contributions to the Kenya Kwanza administration, citing a combined experience of nearly 30 months in three different roles. He served as Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry for 11 months, then as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Delivery and Performance Management for 9 months, and most recently as Senior Economic Advisor to the President for 10 months.

“I thank President Ruto for having given me an opportunity to serve,” he stated. “As I move on to pursue personal interests, I am proud of the work the President and I did to implement the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which I designed together with the President as our 2022 Electoral Platform.”

Kuria’s influence in crafting BETA—a cornerstone policy of the Ruto administration that aims to elevate low-income earners and support grassroots economic empowerment—was particularly emphasized in his farewell statement. He described the agenda as a legacy project, one he is proud to have co-authored and helped implement during the early years of the administration.

His resignation comes at a time of increased political turbulence in the country. In 2024, Kuria was one of several Cabinet Secretaries who lost their positions after President Ruto dissolved his Cabinet in response to mounting pressure from countrywide Gen-Z-led protests. The protests, sparked by public anger over economic challenges, lack of jobs, and allegations of poor governance, forced the President to take sweeping measures to regain public trust, including dismissing all ministers and promising a new approach to leadership.

Following this major shake-up, Kuria was reassigned as a Senior Advisor within the President’s Council of Economic Advisors—a move that many interpreted as a sign of the President’s continued confidence in Kuria’s expertise, particularly in economic planning and policy design.

However, even in his advisory role, Kuria remained relatively low-key, a departure from his once-vocal public engagement style. His final exit from government now paves the way for new speculation about his political future. Analysts and political observers have noted that Kuria, known for his resilience and strategic political moves, could be preparing for a comeback—possibly ahead of the 2027 general elections—or returning to the private sector to pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

As he steps away from public office, Kuria leaves behind a mixed legacy. While he is credited with contributing significantly to trade and investment reforms, public sector efficiency, and grassroots economic policy, his tenure was also marked by controversy and strong political rhetoric. Nevertheless, his resignation was met with warm wishes from his supporters, many of whom praised his dedication to national service.

For now, the former CS has signaled a moment of personal transition, closing one chapter in public service as he prepares to open another, with eyes on what promises to be a new and intriguing path ahead.
