Nairobi County Shuts Down All Naivas Supermarkets Over Expired Goods Scandal
Nairobi County has shut down all Naivas Supermarket branches after expired and uncertified products were found at the Moi Avenue outlet. Officials also cited untested staff handling food. The stores will remain closed pending investigations and health compliance.
Nairobi County has ordered the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket branches within the city after an impromptu inspection at the Moi Avenue branch exposed expired yoghurt and products lacking expiry dates on shelves. The move has shocked many shoppers and dealt a major blow to Kenya’s leading retail chain.
Health Committee Chairperson, MCA Maurice Ochieng, who led the inspection, said the sale of expired items posed a serious risk to public health. He further revealed that some staff handling food products had not undergone medical testing, worsening the situation.
“We found expired products and untested staff serving the public. We have therefore resolved to close all Naivas outlets in Nairobi until proper health standards are met,” Ochieng stated. With over 30 outlets in key locations like Kilimani, Lang’ata, and Kasarani, the closure leaves hundreds of employees in limbo.
County Health Officer Suzanne Silantoi has been urged to fast-track the investigation. The supermarkets will remain shut until all staff are medically cleared and the retail chain proves compliance with safety regulations.
