Seasoned Legal Expert Erastus Ethekon Nominated as IEBC Chairperson
Erastus Edung Ethekon has been nominated as the next IEBC chairperson, pending parliamentary vetting. He is a seasoned lawyer and former Turkana County Attorney with over 20 years of experience. Ethekon holds multiple advanced degrees from universities in Kenya, the UK, and Spain.
Erastus Edung Ethekon has emerged as the surprise nominee for the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), beating out several prominent contenders for the high-stakes position. President William Ruto announced the nomination, which now awaits parliamentary vetting before Ethekon can officially take the reins.
At 48, Ethekon brings over two decades of experience in law and development consultancy. He is currently a partner at Northern Consulting Solution and Ethekon & Co. Advocates. His early career saw him serve at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a program management specialist and later as a programs advisor.
From 2018 until recently, Ethekon served as the County Attorney for Turkana County. His prior roles include work as Chief Technical Advisor for Area-Based Development Programming in Kenya. His career reflects a blend of legal expertise and hands-on development experience.
Ethekon boasts an impressive academic background with a law degree from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Government. He also holds three masters degrees from institutions in Spain and the UK, including specializations in Peace and Conflict Studies, Project Management, and Oil & Gas Law. If approved, he will be tasked with leading Kenya’s next general election.
