Isaac Omondi Odinga, also referred to in some reports as Omondi Oginga, is a member of Kenya’s prominent Odinga family and a younger half-brother of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. Although he has maintained a much lower public profile than Raila and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Isaac has occasionally attracted national attention because of his political choices and, more recently, his role in speaking about the unity and direction of the Odinga family. 

Family background

Isaac Omondi Odinga comes from the family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, one of the most important figures in Kenya's independence-era and post-independence politics. Jaramogi served as Kenya's first Vice-President and later became an important opposition figure. His political legacy has continued through several members of his family, most prominently Raila Odinga and Oburu Oginga.

Unlike Raila and Oburu, who are children of Jaramogi's wife Mary Juma, Isaac is reported to be a son of Jaramogi's third wife, Susan Agik Odinga. Historical reports have therefore described Isaac as Raila's stepbrother or half-brother. The family has historically been large, with Jaramogi having children with several wives. 

Isaac's connection to one of Kenya's most recognizable political families has inevitably placed him within the country's political conversation, even though he has generally remained less prominent than his brothers.

His political involvement

Isaac Omondi Odinga became particularly known nationally during the 2013 general election period, when he took a political position different from that of his brother Raila.

At the time, Raila was the presidential candidate of the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD), while Isaac supported Uhuru Kenyatta, who was running under the Jubilee Alliance. Contemporary reports stated that Isaac campaigned for Uhuru and appeared at political events alongside William Ruto, who was Uhuru's running mate. 

The decision was significant because political families in Kenya often attract considerable attention when relatives support competing candidates. Isaac's decision demonstrated that members of the same family could hold different political positions despite their shared background.

Importantly, his political choice should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a permanent personal dispute with Raila. Political disagreements between relatives do not necessarily mean that family relationships have broken down.

Earlier political ambitions

Isaac had also shown political ambitions before the 2013 election. A 2012 report identified him as a Kisumu-based politician and former councillor for Milimani Ward. The report said he had expressed an intention to challenge his half-brother Oburu Oginga for the Bondo parliamentary seat. 

The same report described Isaac as being willing to associate with politicians from different political camps. In 2012, he was reported to have invited Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to a fundraising event at the Odinga family home in Bondo.

That move attracted attention because Uhuru and Ruto were political opponents of Raila at the time. Isaac defended the invitation as being made in good faith, illustrating his willingness to maintain relationships across political divisions. 

His relatively low public profile

Following the political activity surrounding the 2012 and 2013 elections, Isaac largely stayed away from the national political spotlight. Unlike Raila, who became a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades, or Oburu, who continued holding senior political positions, Isaac did not establish a similarly prominent national political career.

A 2025 Standard report noted that relatively little had been heard from Isaac after the 2013 political period. The report described him as a Kisumu-based member of the Odinga family who had previously broken ranks with Raila during the election. 

His lower profile, however, changed somewhat following Raila Odinga's death, when Isaac began appearing in reports concerning the unity and affairs of the wider Odinga family.

Role in the family after Raila's death

One of the more important developments involving Isaac has been his emergence as a public voice on family unity.

In January 2026, reports about disagreements involving Oburu Oginga and Winnie Odinga brought Isaac into the public discussion. Isaac rejected suggestions that there was a serious division within the family. He said the family remained united and that disagreements or political differences should not be exaggerated into a family conflict. 

He specifically defended the family's internal mechanisms for dealing with disagreements and emphasized the importance of respecting the legacy left by Jaramogi and Raila.

This represents an interesting change in Isaac's public role. Previously, he was widely remembered because he had taken a political position different from Raila's. More recently, his public statements have focused on family cohesion and the preservation of the Odinga legacy.

Isaac and the question of Odinga family unity

The Odinga family has remained an important political family in Kenya, particularly following Raila's death. With Raila no longer personally leading the political movement he built over decades, questions have naturally emerged about the future direction of the family and its political influence.

Isaac has repeatedly emphasized unity rather than division. In January 2026, he rejected claims of a major disagreement between Winnie Odinga and Oburu Oginga and said the family was united under Oburu's leadership. 

His position is significant because he is part of the older generation of the family, while Winnie and Raila Odinga Junior represent a younger generation. His comments therefore form part of the wider conversation about how the family manages generational differences following Raila's death.

His views on Raila's political legacy

Isaac has also been involved in defending aspects of Raila's political legacy.

A September 2026 report said Omondi Oginga, identified as Raila's younger brother, criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for continuing to revisit claims concerning the outcome of the 2022 presidential election. According to the report, he argued that the issue had already been dealt with through the constitutional and judicial process and that the family did not want the debate continually reopened. 

The report is significant because it shows Isaac/Omondi continuing to speak publicly on matters surrounding Raila's political legacy, rather than remaining entirely outside political affairs.

However, it is important to distinguish between Isaac's own documented statements and broader interpretations of what they mean for Kenyan politics. His comments show his position on particular issues, but they do not by themselves establish that he has taken over Raila's political role.

Relationship with the broader Odinga political legacy

The Odinga name carries considerable historical weight in Kenya. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was a major independence-era politician, while Raila became one of Kenya's most influential opposition leaders and served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.

Isaac's political journey has been different. His decision to support Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 demonstrated that being part of the Odinga family did not necessarily mean supporting Raila's political choices. At the same time, his later public statements stressing family unity demonstrate that political differences can coexist with a broader commitment to family relationships.

This distinction is important when discussing Isaac. He should not simply be presented as either an opponent of the Odinga family or as a replacement for Raila. Available reporting instead presents him as a member of the family who has had his own political views while remaining connected to the wider family structure.
