Education PS Bitok warns students responsible for school fires: 'We will come for you!'

Basic Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok has issued a stern warning to students and others involved in school unrest and destruction of property, stating they will face legal action. He confirmed that investigations and close monitoring are ongoing, particularly due to suspicions of outside influence in some incidents.

Despite the unrest, the Ministry of Education insists that the school calendar will remain unchanged, as only a small number of schools have been affected. In less than a week, dozens of schools across the country have sent learners home amid rising tensions.

Speaking in Bomet County, PS Bitok threatened severe consequences for anyone found guilty of inciting disruptions. He said, "We have decided to deal with those people... even students burning schools will not go unpunished. We will come for you... if you are responsible, we will take you to prison even if you are a child."

The Ministry is working with security agencies to investigate the unrest and rule out external meddling. Bitok warned that anyone undermining schools will be dealt with. He urged parents to talk to their children and support teachers.

He noted that the government invests Ksh. 770 billion in education, saying, "a few people want to destroy it... we will not accept. We will stand firm." Despite the incidents, learning will continue normally in most schools. Of 3.2 million learners, only about 2,000 are causing problems, and the calendar will not be disrupted by "a few criminal students."

In Nyeri County, a multi-agency team met to address the unrest. Regional Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said nearly 30 schools in Central Region have been affected. He reiterated the government directive that no school will close prematurely, with security teams ensuring safety during the mid-term starting on the 24th. Several learners have already been arrested and charged, and security teams are working with schools to combat illegal substances and protect students and property.
