IEBC declares DCP's Sammy Waweru the winner of the Ol Kalou by-election with 35,440 votes, while UDA's Samuel Muchina finishes second with 5,450 votes

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Sammy Kamau Ngotho, has been elected as the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after securing 35,440 votes in the by-election.

Results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday morning showed Kamau overwhelmingly defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received 5,450 votes, while Jubilee Party candidate Wilson Kigwa finished third.

The Thursday by-election was overshadowed by incidents of violence, with armed individuals reportedly travelling in unmarked vehicles allegedly attacking residents, journalists, and political supporters. Police also deployed teargas at several polling stations to disperse crowds as unrest escalated, leaving a number of people injured.

The closely watched contest drew nationwide attention, with many viewing it as a major political showdown between President William Ruto's UDA and Rigathi Gachagua-led Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

The by-election was necessitated by the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, making it the constituency's first parliamentary electoral contest since the 2022 General Election.

The campaign period was marked by vigorous political activity, with leaders from rival camps criss-crossing the constituency amid allegations of voter bribery and cash handouts from both sides.
