Gachagua Demands Full-Term Pay Over ‘Unlawful’ Impeachment
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now seeks compensation for his impeachment, claiming it was unlawful. He has dropped his push for reinstatement and wants pay for the full five-year term. His lawyer urged the court to fast-track the case, terming it a personal matter.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken a new legal turn in his impeachment case, now demanding full compensation for the remainder of his five-year term. Gachagua, through his lawyer Paul Muite, has abandoned his initial request for reinstatement and is instead seeking damages, arguing that his removal from office was unlawful.
In court, Muite revealed that Gachagua will be filing an amended petition to reflect this new direction, with the aim of recovering all the salary and benefits he would have earned had he served the full term. "The petitioner no longer seeks to be reinstated. He only wishes to be compensated for the lost income," Muite stated.
He further clarified that no interim applications would be filed and urged the court to prioritize the matter with early hearing dates. “This case is not of public interest but a personal issue directly affecting the petitioner,” Muite emphasized.
The respondents did not oppose the application to amend the petition, paving the way for the compensation battle to proceed. Gachagua’s new approach could spark legal and political debate as he seeks financial justice for what he terms an unlawful impeachment.
