Gachagua Vows to Defy Impeachment, Eyes 2027 Presidential Race
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to run for president in 2027 despite his impeachment. He insists he remains eligible while his case is under appeal. Gachagua also revealed plans for the opposition to unite behind a single candidate to defeat President Ruto.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has boldly announced that his impeachment will not derail his ambitions to contest the presidency in 2027. Speaking during an exclusive interview on Weru TV, Gachagua said Kenya’s constitution allows individuals with pending legal cases to vie for office, citing the example of Sirisia MP John Waluke, who successfully contested while appealing a conviction.

Gachagua vowed to challenge his impeachment all the way to the Supreme Court, stating he remains eligible to run until a final verdict is reached. He dismissed concerns about his legal troubles, asserting that he will pursue the presidency with even greater determination while the case winds through the judicial process.

In a strategic reveal, Gachagua hinted that opposition heavyweights—including Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa—would eventually unite behind one candidate to topple President William Ruto. He pledged to support whichever candidate emerges if he is not the coalition’s choice, stressing the importance of ousting Ruto.

Gachaguas impeachment in October 2024 made history as the first under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, but he maintains that the battle is far from over. Legal experts note, however, that if courts uphold his removal before 2027, Gachagua will be permanently barred from seeking any public office—including the presidency.
