One person has been confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries after a six-storey building collapsed on Monday evening at Tom Mboya Estate in Kisumu City

A six-storey building that was reportedly still under construction collapsed on Monday evening following heavy rains that lashed the area, shocking and panicking local residents. Preliminary reports indicate that one person was pulled from the rubble and taken to hospital, while emergency teams continued searching for others who may be trapped under the debris.

Witnesses said the deceased was a caretaker working at the construction site near Obunga Police Station. The incident drew large crowds of residents and sympathizers. Firefighters, medical staff, county emergency responders, and disaster management teams arrived quickly and began combing through the wreckage for survivors.

Police later sealed off the area to allow rescue operations to proceed safely and to protect the public, as fears lingered that more people could still be buried. Residents joined rescue workers in manually removing debris, while others watched anxiously, hoping the operation would succeed.

The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been confirmed, though initial accounts suggest the structure gave way after prolonged heavy rainfall in Kisumu on Monday evening.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about construction safety and the enforcement of building regulations in major towns, especially Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nakuru.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident, including whether proper building approvals, inspections, and safety standards were followed before the structure collapsed.
