The Member of Parliament for Laikipia East, Mwangi Kiunjuri, has become a pillar for President William Ruto in his efforts to ensure that he regains the support he had from Mount Kenya during the 2022 general elections. Mr. Kiunjuri is among the experienced politicians with significant experience, serving his fourth term in Parliament, in addition to having served as the Minister of Agriculture under the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. President Ruto relies heavily on Mr.

Kiunjuri to gain support from Western Mount Kenya, while Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki is hopeful of attracting Eastern Mount Kenya. After joining politics at a young age, Mr. Kiunjuri has worked with three presidents and was among the most trusted politicians by President Mwai Kibaki (now deceased). During the campaigns to support the promulgation of the new constitution in 2010, Mr. Kiunjuri was one of the politicians entrusted by Mr. Kibaki to ensure that Mount Kenya approved the draft constitution.

Kiunjuri has a talent for public speaking and frequently uses proverbs in the Agikuyu language, with many of his meetings appearing to excite his audience. In 2022, standing with his party TSP, he weathered the fierce waves of UDA in Mount Kenya, outpacing the former MP of the area, Amin Deddy of UDA.From 2013 to 2022, he was not a member of parliament after losing in the gubernatorial race in 2013, but he did not run in 2017. He was then appointed as Minister of Agriculture.Since returning to parliament in 2022, Mr. Kiunjuri has been among the politicians who have had significant hostility with the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.Last month, while in America, Mr. Gachagua accused Mr. Kiunjuri, stating that the government was using him along with Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah to perpetuate oppression against the youth of Mount Kenya.Recently, the MP was appointed chairman of a group of MPs who are loyal to the Kenya Kwanza government. Now, Mr. Kiunjuris first task is to ensure that Kenya Kwanza secures the seat in the Mbeere North constituency that remains vacant.

Despite the challenges faced by the MPs supporting Mr. Gachagua in delivering speeches at public events and being heckled, Mr. Kiunjuri has been persistent in using platforms and meetings to state that he cannot follow the political path of the former deputy president."We will not use brutal politics but will use politics to bring development projects to our people," said Mr. Kiunjuri in a series of meetings he has been holding in his constituency.
