National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is set to travel to Vatican City on Thursday, April 24, 2025, to represent President William Ruto and the Kenyan government at the funeral of Pope Francis, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at St. Peter’s Square. This comes following the passing of the pontiff, a global religious leader widely revered for his dedication to peace and humanity.

 Wetang’ula confirmed the announcement during a solemn event at the Apostolic Nunciature in Nairobi, where he led a delegation of MPs to offer condolences. He revealed that President Ruto personally nominated him to attend the funeral on behalf of the nation. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was also in attendance, joining the nation in mourning the late Pope.

 In his tribute, Wetang’ula praised Pope Francis as a bridge-builder and peacemaker, quoting the pontiff’s poignant words: “The world is like a public hospital that heals wounds but wounds hearts.” He emphasized the Pope’s efforts to promote unity and compassion across different cultures and religions.

 Raila Odinga also paid heartfelt homage to the late pontiff, describing him as a gentle spiritual leader who spoke up for the oppressed and stood firmly against injustice. “His passing is a global loss,” Odinga said. “He was a beacon of hope and reconciliation, not just for Catholics but for all humanity.”
