Forensic psychology is a branch of psychology which applies psychological principles to the legal system.Psychological principles involves the fundamental concepts that are used to explain behaviours, mental processes, memories and emotions.Specialists in forensic psychology are called forensic psychologists and they serve the main function of understanding human behaviour in the legal system.They do variety of work including:

Assessments of individuals in the legal system.Forensic psychologists collaborate with workers and employees in the legal system to conduct psychological assessments to determine whether the individual commited a crime when the mental state was okay or not.When the criminal victim comitted a crime when he or she was mentally unhealthy for example if the victim was at the time of crime was suffering from schizophrenia,he or she can receive a different treatment.

Investigation is a very key function and key area that forensic psychology comes in.Psychological principles such as motivation, emotions, cognitions and memory can be effectively applied to conduct a thorough investigation in the legal system.With the help of criminalogists, forensic psychologist can effectively conduct investigations.Criminalogists are specialists who are trained to study laws, regulations,crimes and how these crimes can affect the society as a whole.

Civil litigation.Forensic psychology is applied when dealing with cases like defilement,rape, domestic clashes, jobs and work problems.It can be applied in the high courts when dealing with such cases.Therefore there is also a great need for lawyers to have knowledge in forensic psychology as well as forensic psychologists having knowledge in law.The inter relationship between the two fields is very crucial since there are very many cases that require multidisciplinary approach to handle.

Psychology in law.Lawyers must be able to study the criminal behaviours and be able to establish a good rapport with the client he or she is attending to.Studying the criminal behaviours and establishment of good rapport with the client are knowledge borrowed from psychology.Law in psychology occurs when psychologists assure the clients of the confidentiality.

Confidentiality is very important and the client has to be told on the various limits in which confidentiality can be broken for example when one is to harm himself either through suicide or other means or harm the lives of others and when the information maybe required by court of law.In conclusion, forensic psychology is very important, the more you learn,the more you get to know more.
