Psychology refers to the study of mind in relation to the behaviour.Behaviour refers to physical, emotional and cognitive actions that humans engage in.Behaviour can also be referred to a response to stimuli.There are two types of behaviour namely:overt behaviour and covert behaviour.Overt behaviour refers to the directly observable behaviours whereas covert are the indirectly observable behaviours which requires self reports and assessment to be aware of.
Reverse psychology therefore refers to a technique in which an individual advocates for the opposite thing he or she wants as a way of influencing other members or as a way to enhance decision making and curiosity.Reverse psychology has been used in day to day lives in parenting,sales and marketing with the main aims of enhancing influence, decision making and enhancing curiosity.
How does reverse psychology works?Reverse psychology works through reactance or as a psychological approach.In reactance, for example if one advocates for the opposite of what he or she actually desires,it can trigger attention of others and enhance curiosity.In psychological approach,it can be used as ego defence mechanism.It can be used as an ego defence mechanism in this way,if an individual feels that he or she is inferior and finds that facing the problem directly will make him or her more inferior,she can adopt reverse psychology to get the feeling of superiority.
Reverse psychology can be applied in various sectors including education, parenting,sales and marketing.I will take you step by step how reverse psychology can be applied in these sectors.In education, reverse psychology can be used by telling the students that that mathematics is above your level to raise curiosity.In parenting reverse psychology can be used by telling the child that you cannot run to the shop and come back in twenty minutes.By a child hearing this he or she will run to the shop at a faster rate and speed.
In sales,a sales person can apply reverse psychology by telling the customer that I know you cannot taste the juice because it is too bitter.A customer hearing this will be curious by asking herself how bitter is it.In the process the customer finds himself or herself buying the product to go and have a taste.In marketing and advertisement,reverse psychology can be used by advertising products using the photos and images of celebrities.For example, advertising a nike shoe to a sportsman,the sportsman will be convinced to buy the shoe to run as fast as the celebrity.
The impacts of reverse psychology in various sectors include,increase in the demand of a product (sales and marketing), enhancing curiosity among individuals including students (education) and to improve creativity, innovativeness and proper parenting to children (parenting).These impacts combined together contribute to the positive effects of reverse psychology.
