GENDER EQUALITY IN WORK PLACES.
Gender refers to social and cultural expectations about how a male or a female is supposed to behave.Sex refers to the biological characteristics that define an individual as either male or female.Equality refers to provision of services to every gender without any discrimination whereas equity refers to fair treatment of all individuals as equal despite their gender as being a male or a female.
Work refers to an activity that requires effort to be exerted inorder for it to be accomplished.Therefore, workplaces refers to the physical settings in which various work is taking place.Gender equality in workplaces refers to fair treatment of both males and females without any form of discrimination as well as the provision of goods and services to both males and females with justice.
For many years gender inequality and inequity have been a very serious problem affecting the workplaces.But as of now there are various strategies that have been put in place to ensure that the above problem is solved, efforts are being made and the government and other organisations are really burning the midnight oil to ensure the efficiency in the implementation of these strategies.
Two third gender rule.Two thirds gender rule rule was implemented with the main aim of ensuring that no gender shall hold more than two thirds of the leadership seats in the parliament.This has been witnessed by seeing women standing out and getting these leadership positions thus gender equality in politics and leadership has shown significant improvements.Even though not fully implemented and put into place,there are seen hopes in achieving this.
Women representative seats reservation for women has shown how gender equality is being implemented in the political workplaces.For example in Kenya,there are forty seven counties and out of these forty seven counties each has its own woman representative.This is a significant progress since women can hold and access goods and services through their women representative as well as other programs from the county and the national government through national government affirmative action funds.
Mentorship for both men and women have increased gender equality in workplaces since during these mentorship programs both boys and girls get to learn more about career opportunities,career rules and regulations, they get information about the effects of career discrimination including inequality and inequity.Guidance through education and awareness raising campaigns have changed the perception of individuals for example nurses can be both girls and boys not as traditionally perceived to be of girls.
Education is power and through education from early childhood years,the students have been trained on the effectiveness of career involvement by both genders.Therefore,by doing this the root problem is being addressed effectively making young boys and girls grow up with the mentality of gender equality in every aspect.
To conclude,gender equality in workplaces is very effective and important for a growing nation.The various ways we can adopt to improve gender equality is addressing the root causes, providing mentorship and guidance programs to individuals and promoting education and awareness among all genders.
