Retired Chief Justice David Maraga has vowed to eradicate corruption if elected President in 2027. Addressing members of the United Green Movement (UGM) party at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kutus during his visit to Kirinyaga County, Mr. Maraga lamented the rampant looting of public funds, promising to put a stop to it.
Maraga insisted that he was capable enough to protect public assets and urged Kenyans to trust him. “I am running for president and I ask Kenyans to trust me, I will fight corruption to the end,” he said.
Maraga said he realised the situation in the country was not good after the Gen Z generation stormed Parliament to protest the state of the economy. “Life has become difficult for everyone because of corruption, and that is why Gen Z stormed Parliament to express their anger. I agree with them that the main problem of this country is corruption. If I take over, I will put Kenya on a better path,” he said.
He explained that if the countrys resources are managed well, every Kenyan will benefit and improve their lives. "The current leaders are stealing public funds, that is why there is no medicine in hospitals and no money to fund education," he added.
He promised to fully implement the Constitution to successfully fight corruption, which he said has left many Kenyans in poverty. Maraga urged Kenyans to vote for him in large numbers so that he can unseat President William Ruto, who he claimed was not leading the country forward.
“Let us work together to remove this government through a vote. We are tired of corruption that affects every sector of the economy,” he said. Maraga also explained that the country’s economy has collapsed due to bad leadership and added that he has the power to strengthen it.
“Our economy has collapsed, and I have a solution to fix it for the benefit of every Kenyan,” he said. He criticized the Kenya First government for its plan to import cheap rice without duty from abroad.
He said it was surprising that the government was planning to import rice while rice from Mwea farmers was rotting in warehouses. “This government does not care about its citizens. It is only interested in benefiting other countries at the expense of our farmers. This government should be removed through a vote,” he insisted.
He said rice farmers are important people and should be protected so that they can find a market for their products. “The rice will be imported by the lords at the expense of our farmers. This is corruption and we will not allow it,” he added.
Accompanied by the candidate for the Kirinyaga Woman Representative seat, Ms Emma Waithira, Mr Maraga urged Kenyans to join him in pushing for a change of leadership without fear.
At the same time, he criticized President Ruto for ordering security officers to shoot in the legs those who attack police stations or government infrastructure.
He said the order was a violation of the Constitution, adding that suspects should be arrested, charged and tried if found guilty and not killed. "This is the first time I have heard the President issue an unconstitutional order. Suspects should be charged not shot," he said.
