Gov’t Rolls Out Smart System to Track Medical Equipment and Boost Vaccine Access
The Ministry of Health has launched a digital system to track and manage medical equipment across Kenya. It also rolled out a USD 16 million vaccine management platform, KeNVIP. Additionally, 2,000 Cold Chain Equipment units were flagged off to boost immunisation nationwide.

The Ministry of Health has unveiled a digital system to enhance the monitoring of medical devices across Kenyas health facilities. Announced on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the new data management platform aims to streamline equipment tracking and maintenance at both national and county levels, with real-time updates for critical devices such as dialysis units, ultrasound machines, and X-ray equipment.

Piloted in Nyeri and Makueni counties, the system has already recorded around 1,400 medical devices and will be integrated into the Health Data Authority’s Digital Health Superhighway. The ministry says the innovation will strengthen healthcare infrastructure management and improve service delivery across the country.

This move follows the recent launch of the Kenya Electronic National Vaccine and Immunisation Portal (KeNVIP) on May 14. Health CS Aden Duale revealed that USD 16 million has been invested in the platform to improve decision-making, accountability, and effectiveness in immunisation services, with plans underway to migrate it to the government data centre.

In addition, the CS flagged off 2,000 Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) units in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Bank. The equipment, including solar-powered fridges and cold boxes, will be distributed across all 47 counties, especially remote areas, to ensure vaccines remain effective and accessible, further strengthening Kenya’s push toward Universal Health Coverage.
