Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has been released on a Ksh200,000 cash bail or a Ksh500,000 bond after pleading not guilty to hate speech charges at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi. He was arraigned on Monday, May 19, 2025, before Magistrate Paul Mutai for allegedly posting inflammatory remarks targeting the Luo community on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to the charge sheet, Salasya is accused of publishing a post on May 10, 2025, suggesting that the Luo people were enemies of the Luhya community, a statement deemed inciteful and calculated to fuel ethnic animosity. The post allegedly stated, in part, "Luos are number one enemies of Luhya people…Ama tuwatahiri iishe."
The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) legislator was arrested dramatically on Friday, May 16, along the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway. He later claimed via social media that individuals claiming to be DCI officers ambushed his convoy, shot at his vehicle, and disarmed his security team before detaining him.
Salasya maintained that the arrest was politically motivated and insisted he was targeted for speaking out. The case will be mentioned again on June 4, 2025, for further directions.
