They Called Me a Liar, But Here We Are : Ruto Celebrates Mukuru Housing Milestone
President Ruto handed over 1,080 affordable housing units to Mukuru Kwa Njenga residents, celebrating it as proof his housing plan is working. He dismissed critics who doubted the project’s success. The initiative has injected billions into the economy and aims to deliver 13,000 homes in total.

President William Ruto on Tuesday proudly handed over 1,080 affordable housing units to Mukuru Kwa Njenga residents in Nairobi, declaring it a major win for his administration. Speaking during the event, an ecstatic Ruto described the project as a fulfilment of his long-criticized Affordable Housing dream, which he said many doubted. “They told me I was a liar—look at what we’ve done today,” he stated, quoting Bible verses and offering prayers of gratitude.

Ruto hailed the initiative as transformative, noting it was only the beginning of a broader plan to uplift lives through decent housing. He revealed that more than 13,000 units are planned for the area, with 5,000 to be handed over in August or September, and another 5,000 early next year. “This is a historic day—these keys unlock more than homes, they unlock dignity and opportunity,” he added.

The Head of State disclosed that the project had injected over Ksh.28 billion into the economy, including Ksh.11 billion into construction and neighborhood development. He emphasized that the housing scheme will stimulate local enterprise with new businesses, schools, clinics, and digital startups expected to flourish.

The Mukuru site features modern infrastructure, including roads, walkways, sewer lines, a health centre, a fire station, and a 5-million-litre underground water tank. Ruto urged Kenyans to register on the Boma Yangu platform, encouraging more citizens to take part in what he called “a national journey towards dignity through housing.”
