The Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) leaders have strongly condemned what they claim was a failed government plan to arrest former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua upon his return from the United States.

Addressing the gathering on Thursday, August 21, the DCP party leader, Cleophas Malalah said the party would not tolerate any form of intimidation against Gachagua, warning that his safety would be heavily guarded by loyal supporters.

“They brought over 182 policemen to JKIA to arrest our party leader and take him to the DCI, but they failed because, you, the people failed, because, they failed because, they failed because, they failed because, they failed because of the people, they brought because of the people, they brought because of the people, they failed because of the people’s plan, they failed because of the people’s plan, they failed because, they failed because of the needs.

“We know what was planned. But let me be clear, we will transport our leader from the airport to his room if necessary. "No one will touch him." Nyandarua Senator John Methu echoed the sentiments, accusing elements within the government of being alarmed by Gachaguas popularity after he withdrew from the ruling coalition.

"No amount of goons. No amount of intimidation will stop us from making you a one-term president," Methu taunted him. "There are forces that fear his political influence and want to stop him before 2027. But we are ready to stand with him every step of the way." The remarks come amid political tension following Gachaguas trip to the United States, where he held meetings with Diaspora supporters and voiced criticism of President William Rutos leadership. The DCP has vowed to oppose what it calls state-sponsored political persecution.

Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned Gachagua against disrupting peace in Nairobi on his return from the United States. Murkomen, saying security agencies are on high alert, has warned that the former DCP boss could be arrested, citing intelligence reports indicating planned violence on the day of his return. “The last time he was around, there were a lot of goons in the name of protest; we were very prepared, and every other minute, the National Police Service is ready to protect citizens and their properties,” Murkomen said in Murang’a County on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

“Of course, we are aware of these things of intimidation, threatening football, you know, threatening all these issues, and I need to say that we will take legal action,” Murkomen said. The local CS also said the government would closely monitor Gachagua’s political activities across the country. “Security agencies should be prepared for a more chaotic environment due to his return to the country. Let me say that the security sector is ready to address any issues of insecurity,” he said.
