Passaris Demands Justice from Suluhu Over Abuse of Activists in Tanzania
Esther Passaris has urged Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu to ensure justice for activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire, who were allegedly tortured in custody. She condemned their mistreatment as a human rights violation and a regional disgrace. The duo had travelled to Tanzania in solidarity with opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has made a passionate appeal to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu to deliver justice for Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire, who were reportedly tortured while in Tanzanian custody in May 2025. Taking to her X account on June 2, Passaris decried the abuse, calling it a grave violation of human rights and a dark moment for East Africa.
Passaris urged President Suluhu—renowned for breaking barriers and championing womens leadership—to act not only as a leader but also as a mother and moral voice. “Progress cannot coexist with abuse of power and silencing of activists,” she emphasized, demanding accountability and assurance that such atrocities will never happen again.
The call for justice came just hours after Mwangi and Atuhaire recounted their traumatic ordeal in Nairobi. Mwangi detailed how he was stripped, tied upside down, and sexually violated by Tanzanian authorities, while Atuhaire revealed she was physically assaulted and forcibly undressed after refusing to comply.
The two had traveled to Tanzania to support opposition figure Tundu Lissu but were arrested, detained incommunicado, and deported. Passaris concluded her message with prayers for their healing and praised their courage as a beacon of hope for a freer and more just Africa.
