Cheboingoing Comprehensive School is set to compete in the Bomet Central Sub-county Primary and Junior Secondary School games with high hopes and confidence as the competition begins tomorrow at Chepngaina Field.
Fresh from a dominant performance at the Bomet Township Zone championships, the school will be represented in both boys’ and girls’ volleyball categories at the primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) levels.
The school's outstanding display at the zonal competition has boosted expectations of another strong performance as it seeks qualification for the Rift Valley regional games slated for Nakuru.
Head of Institution and volleyball head coach Rodrick Chepkwony expressed confidence in his teams, noting that they have prepared adequately for the challenge ahead.
“Our goal is to secure qualification for the Rift Valley regional championships. We expect strong competition, but we are well prepared and determined to succeed,” said Chepkwony.
The school’s achievements in volleyball have been driven by a deliberate effort to identify and nurture talent at an early stage. According to Chepkwony, volleyball training starts as early as Grade Three, giving learners ample time to develop their skills and gain competitive experience.
“Our vision is to establish Cheboingoing as a sports powerhouse, particularly in volleyball. We have talented learners and continue to support their growth through structured training programmes,” he said.
Chepkwony also commended the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum for creating opportunities for learners to develop their talents while pursuing academic excellence. He noted that sports have become an important avenue for students to access greater opportunities.
The school’s volleyball programme has already yielded significant success, with more than 10 former learners securing scholarships to various secondary schools across Bomet County because of their sporting talent.
“Several of our former students are now pursuing their education free of charge through sports scholarships. This demonstrates the importance of investing in talent development,” he added.
Chepkwony further revealed that coaches and teachers from secondary schools have been actively scouting players from Cheboingoing, reflecting the high standard of talent being developed at the institution.
Beyond winning competitions, he emphasized that sports play a crucial role in instilling discipline among learners and helping keep young people away from negative influences such as drug abuse.
