South Africa prepared to challenge Mexico in World Cup opener, says coach

South Africa's coach, Hugo Broos, says his team is fully prepared to take on Mexico's skill and the energy of their home crowd in Thursday's World Cup opener. He emphasized that they are ready to compete for every ball against what he called the group's "strongest team."

"They play good football," Broos told reporters on Wednesday. "They have very good players—players who can change a match. And playing in front of 85,000 people gives them an extra lift."

Broos noted that South Africa has done thorough research on Mexico and won't be intimidated by the big occasion. He added that the team adjusted to the city's altitude by arriving early.

"Because of the altitude, we had to come a bit earlier," he said. "We had ten days, and I think that's enough. From that perspective, we're ready."

South Africa is in Group A alongside Mexico, the Czech Republic, and South Korea. Broos believes the first match could be crucial to their chances of advancing.

"In a group like this, winning your first game is very important," he said. "If you don't win, you're already in a tough spot."

The match holds special memories for South Africa. They opened the 2010 World Cup against Mexico in Johannesburg, drawing 1-1 after Siphiwe Tshabalala scored one of the tournament's most unforgettable goals.

Broos himself played for Belgium at the 1986 World Cup, where they faced Mexico in the group stage and eventually finished fourth.

Mexico, the host nation, will be looking for their first-ever win in a World Cup opening match after seven previous attempts.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena said South Africa wants to rise to the occasion while giving themselves the best shot at reaching the knockout rounds.

"We want to be competitive and see ourselves advance," Mokoena said. "We're here to enjoy the experience. When you go home, you don't want to have any regrets."
