Murkomen Under Fire as Cherargei Blames Him for Rising Insecurity
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has accused Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen of incompetence amid rising insecurity. He linked Murkomen’s leadership to growing deaths from banditry, calling for urgent action. Murkomen defended his record, citing a drop in attacks but admitted ongoing security challenges.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has launched a blistering attack on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, blaming him for a surge in insecurity across the country. In a fiery statement on X (formerly Twitter), Cherargei accused Murkomen of incompetence and arrogance, claiming his leadership failures were endangering Kenyan lives. "What I saw in Murkomen years ago—kiburi and incompetence—is now evident to all. Unfortunately, lives are being lost," he lamented.
Cherargei contrasted Murkomen’s tenure with that of his predecessor, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, whom he credited for maintaining order during his time in the security docket. The senator’s warning echoed sentiments from other leaders, including Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who went as far as demanding Murkomen’s resignation. “If you can’t stop Kenyans from being butchered like chickens, resign,” Khalwale declared in a post reshared by Cherargei.
The heated criticism came just a day after Murkomen reported that 21 people—among them civilians, a police officer, and suspected bandits—had died in banditry-related incidents between January and March 2025. However, he noted a decline compared to the same period in 2024, when 58 lives were lost. Stock theft cases also fell from 263 to 167, according to a ministry report.
Despite the improved statistics, Murkomen admitted major hurdles remain in the fight against banditry, including illegal arms, political incitement, and poor infrastructure. He urged leaders to stop politicizing national security, insisting the government was committed to strengthening safety measures and development in affected regions.
