The construction of the new Kipchamba National Stadium in Bomet County has emerged as one of the major development stories in the region, with the project attracting renewed attention ahead of President William Ruto’s anticipated visit to Bomet. The stadium is being developed as a modern sports facility intended to transform the county’s sporting landscape, provide opportunities for young athletes and stimulate economic activity around Bomet.

The project, estimated at Sh950 million, is designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 spectators. It is being constructed at Kyogong in Nyangores Ward, Chepalungu Sub-County, on land acquired by the Bomet County Government. The project is being implemented with national-government involvement, while the State Department of Defence is supervising the works. 

The stadium has become particularly significant because Bomet has for years lacked a fully operational modern facility capable of hosting major sporting competitions. The new development is therefore being viewed as an opportunity to give athletes, footballers and other sportspeople from the county a better platform to train and compete.

Construction of Kipchamba Stadium

The journey towards the new stadium reached an important milestone on May 7, 2026, when the County Government of Bomet officially handed over the site for construction. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior national and county government officials, including Bomet Governor Professor Hillary Barchok, Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru and Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot was also present. 

The development is taking place on land recently purchased by the county government at Kyogong, on the outskirts of Bomet Town. According to the county government, the decision to use a new site was aimed at providing an appropriate location for a modern facility without being constrained by some of the challenges associated with the earlier Bomet IAAF Stadium project. 

The new stadium is planned to include a CAF-standard football pitch and a tartan athletics track. These facilities are expected to support both football and athletics, two of the sports in which Kenya has traditionally produced significant talent. 

The plans also provide for additional sporting infrastructure in the future. Space around the main stadium is expected to be secured for the possible construction of an indoor volleyball and basketball arena as well as a warm-up running track. This means the development is being conceived as more than simply a football ground; it is intended to become a wider sporting centre.

Recent progress at the stadium

The project has continued to attract attention because of visible preparations at the construction site. In August, officials from China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), Bomet County officials, Ministry of Defence engineers, architects and environmental assessors conducted technical assessments at the site. The inspection was important because it cleared the way for the contractor to proceed with construction activities. 

Reports indicated that the final topographic inspection had been completed, allowing the contractor to mobilise to the site. This marked another important step from the planning and groundbreaking stage towards actual construction.

The Kenya News Agency subsequently reported that the project was expected to proceed with construction works and that the facility would feature changing rooms, sports equipment, a modern football playing surface and other supporting infrastructure. The county has also been facilitating the rerouting of an access road to Kapmenwo Village following fencing of the stadium site. 

The developments have created anticipation among residents who have been waiting for a major sporting facility that can serve the county for many years.

Why the stadium is important to Bomet

Kipchamba Stadium is significant because of the potential role it can play in sports and talent development. Bomet is home to many young people interested in football, athletics and other disciplines, but the availability of modern sporting facilities has remained a challenge.

A properly equipped stadium can give athletes a suitable environment in which to train and compete. It can also allow Bomet to host county, national and potentially international sporting events, depending on the final standards and approvals.

For athletics, the planned tartan track could be particularly important. Kenya has a strong international reputation in middle- and long-distance running, and providing proper training infrastructure outside major urban centres can help identify and nurture athletes at an earlier age.

The football component is equally important. The stadium is expected to provide a potential home venue for APS Bomet FC, which has faced difficulties regarding suitable facilities for top-flight football. The club has had to use venues outside Bomet for some home matches because the older IAAF Stadium was considered unsuitable for Premier League games. 

A modern home ground could therefore reduce the burden on the club and allow local supporters to watch competitive football within the county.

The old Bomet IAAF Stadium controversy

The rise of Kipchamba Stadium also has to be understood against the background of the long-running problems surrounding the old Bomet IAAF Stadium.

The earlier stadium project had been intended to provide a much larger sporting facility, but construction stalled. Reports have highlighted concerns involving funding, land issues and the structural condition of some sections of the project. 

The history of the old stadium has made the new Kipchamba project particularly important. There is a strong desire among residents for the new facility to avoid the delays and uncertainties that affected the earlier project.

President William Ruto had previously directed the national government to take over and complete the stalled Bomet stadium. However, the project did not proceed as initially anticipated. The President later handed the facility to Bomet University during the institution's charter award ceremony in 2024. 

Kipchamba Stadium consequently represents a fresh attempt to provide Bomet with a modern sports facility.

President Ruto’s anticipated visit

The project is attracting additional public attention because of President William Ruto’s anticipated visit to Bomet. However, it is important to distinguish between confirmed project developments and reports about the President’s itinerary.

The stadium itself is a national-government-supported development, and President Ruto's administration has been publicly associated with its financing and implementation. Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok has previously thanked the President and the Kenya Kwanza administration for the investment in the county. 

If the President visits Bomet and includes the project among his development engagements, Kipchamba Stadium is likely to receive considerable public attention. Such a visit could provide an opportunity for national and county officials to assess the progress of the construction and communicate expectations regarding its completion.

At the same time, reports about a presidential visit should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation that the stadium will be officially opened during the visit. Current information indicates that the stadium project is still under construction, with the county government previously giving February 2027 as the expected completion period. 

This distinction is important because residents may expect a fully completed stadium when, in reality, the project is progressing towards completion.

Economic impact expected from the project

Beyond sports, Kipchamba Stadium is expected to have an economic impact on Bomet.

Large sporting facilities attract athletes, coaches, supporters, officials, vendors and visitors. When competitions are held, local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, transport operators and retail shops can benefit from increased activity.

The construction itself can also create employment opportunities for local workers and businesses supplying materials and services.

Governor Barchok has said the stadium is expected to create employment, generate revenue and contribute to the economic fortunes of Bomet Town. 

The project could therefore become part of a broader strategy to strengthen Bomet's position as a regional centre for sports and entertainment.

A potential talent-development hub

One of the strongest arguments for the project is its potential to nurture young talent.

Many talented young people in Kenya begin their sporting careers at school and community level. Without proper facilities, however, some struggle to access quality training environments.

A modern stadium can provide space for schools, clubs and community teams to conduct competitions and training programmes. It could also attract professional coaches and sporting organisations interested in identifying emerging talent.

The county government has specifically described Kipchamba Stadium as an important investment in sports and talent development.

The second is the completion date. The county government has projected completion in February 2027, meaning the public will be interested in whether the project remains on schedule. 

The third is the quality of construction. Given the history of the stalled Bomet IAAF Stadium, residents are likely to demand that the new project meets the promised standards.

Another major issue is future management and maintenance. Building a stadium is only the first step. Maintaining the playing surface, athletics track, seating, changing rooms, drainage, lighting and other infrastructure will require sustained investment.

A new chapter for sports in Bomet

The emergence of Kipchamba Stadium marks a potentially important new chapter for Bomet's sporting ambitions.

For years, the county has faced the frustration of having an ambitious stadium project that failed to reach completion. The new Sh950 million project offers an opportunity to address that gap through a fresh facility on a newly acquired site.
