Babu Owino Admitted as Advocate, Vows to Defend Kenyans in Court
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been admitted to the roll of advocates, marking a major legal milestone. He pledged to use his new role to fight for justice and hold the government accountable. Owino credited his journey to his tough upbringing in Kisumu’s Nyalenda slums.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has officially been admitted to the roll of advocates, joining 609 others now recognized as advocates of the High Court of Kenya. The legislator, who holds a first-class degree in actuarial science and has pursued four advanced degrees, completed his law studies more than a decade after enrolling in 2013.
Speaking during the ceremony on Friday, May 23, 2025, Babu reflected on his humble beginnings in Kisumu’s Nyalenda slums, where his mother brewed chang’aa to make ends meet. He cited repeated police harassment of slum residents as the driving force behind his legal ambitions. “The injustice I witnessed shaped my determination to understand and use the law to defend ordinary Kenyans,” he said.
Babu pledged to leverage his new legal status to push for justice, especially for underprivileged citizens. “This is not a personal achievement but a new weapon in the fight for equity,” he stated. “Be ready for legal action to lower the cost of living, create jobs, and demand accountability.”
He also thanked his family for sacrificing their dreams to support his education, saying he had always been driven by a divine promise: “If God lifted me from the slums, I swore to use that opportunity to serve His people.”
